It’s amazing how naturally paranoid we’re all expected to be now…

Yet another email that went out at my office that included advice like:

  • Don’t use wireless networks in hotels, kiosks, airports, or at conferences. 
  • Do not insert any free disk or thumb drive in your laptop.
  • When speaking on your mobile phone, do not use the speaker phone in public areas.
  • Lock your mobile phone when it’s not in use.
  • Do not leave your business card or leave information on a sign-up sheet that is unattended.

A video describing some security pitfalls of mobile devices

Various studies cited in the video tell users that:

  • 84% are unaware device can transmit confidential data w/out knowledge
  • 74% do not consider their mobile device is at risk
  • 51% use no password lock
  • The steady advances of hacker tools have changed the nature of the mobile threat space. 

Users are urged to:

  • Use a pass code lock on their device.
  • Limit the amount of personal information kept on their device
  • Turn off GPS tracking applications.
  • Update the phone’s or device’s operating system software regularly
  • Uninstall unused applications
  • Be cautious of using public wifi spots.
